Similar               to               an               Amber               Alert,               a               Silver               Alert               goes               into               effect               when               a               mentally               impaired               person,               60               or               older               goes               missing               and               is               reported               to               the               local               police.When               police               determine               that               the               disappearance               poses               a               serious               threat               to               the               missing               person's               welfare               and               safety,               a               Silver               Alert               goes               into               effect.

Florida               Governor               Charlie               Christ               has               finally               signed               Florida's               long               needed               Silver               Alert               Program.

Approximately               4.3               million               Florida               residents               are               older               than               60.

About               502,000               may               have               varying               degrees               of               dementia               or               Alzheimer's               disease.

Roughly               95%               percent               live               independently               according               to               the               Florida               Dept.

of               Law               Enforcement.

Most               seniors               will               never               need               a               Silver               Alert,               but               for               the               few               that               do,               the               program               can               be               a               lifesaver.

Several               states               already               have               Silver               Alerts               for               missing               seniors;               but               until               recently,               Florida               had               none.
               A               lost               senior               citizen               with               dementia               can               be               compared               to               a               small               child               who               is               lost               and               has               difficulty               remembering               his               name               or               phone               number.

That               confusion               is               amplified               since               many               seniors               leave               their               familiar               homes               and               move               in               with               family               or               into               assisted               living               and               don't               know               the               specifics               of               their               new               residence.
               According               to               the               Alzheimer's               Association               of               the               5.2               million               Floridians               who               suffer               from               dementia,               six               out               of               ten               of               those               will               wander.

Only               4%               of               those               who               leave               home               alone               will               be               able               to               find               their               way               back.
               Each               year               hundreds               of               seniors               with               dementia               wander               away               from               their               homes               or               care-giving               facilities....on               foot               or               driving.

If               not               found               within               24               hours,               half               will               suffer               serious               injury               or               death.

As               Baby               Boomers               age,               the               toll               will               increase.
               Time               is               of               the               essence               when               an               individual               with               Alzheimer's               or               dementia               wanders               or               drives               away.

Mary               Lalluci               believes               a               notification               program,               similar               to               the               Amber               Alert,               could               have               prevented               her               mother               Mary               Zelter               from               drowning,               after               she               disappeared               from               an               assisted               living               facility               in               Largo,               Florida.
               Mary               Zelter,               86,               who               suffered               occasional               bouts               of               dementia,               left               her               assisted               -living               home               in               her               white               Chrysler               Sebrig               convertible               and               never               returned.

Fisherman               found               her               body               and               car,               a               week               later               in               the               Intracoastal               Waterway               off               Clearwater               Beach,               about               10               miles               away.

She               had               gone               to               a               grocery               store,               made               a               purchase,               and               got               lost.
               Friends               and               family               put               up               "Missing               Person'               flyers               and               searched               the               area               with               volunteers               and               police               for               over               a               week.
               "Those               seven               days               were               so               grueling,"               Mary               Lalluci               said.

"You               just               don't               want               any               other               family               to               go               through               that               terror."               She               felt               a               notification               system               like               the               Amber               Alert               could               have               saved               her               mother.

"I               couldn't               believe               of               all               the               states,               Florida               didn't               have               a               system               in               place,"               so               she               fought               to               get               a               Silver               Alert               notification               Program               in               effect.
               Eight               months               after               the               drowning               death               of               her               mother,               her               efforts               paid               off.

Florida's               Silver               Alert               Program               was               passed               and               signed               by               Governor               Charlie               Crist.
               The               Silver               Alert               Program               works               like               this.

When               police               are               notified               and               determine               that               a               mentally               impaired               person               over               60               is               missing,               and               is               in               danger,               a               Silver               Alert               goes               into               effect.
               Vital               information               is               broadcasted               to               the               public               by               way               of               radio,               television,               news               and               electronic               highway               signs               (if               the               person               has               driven               off)               with               the               vehicle's               make,               model               and               tag               number.
               One               feature               of               Florida's               program               sends               an               automated               phone               call               to               every               residence               within               a               5               mile               radius               of               the               missing               person's               home               describing               the               person               and/or               the               vehicle               being               driven.
               Governor               Charlie               Crist               remarked               at               the               bill               signing,               that               the               Silver               Alert               Program               will               now               help               prevent               tragedy               among               one               of               Florida's               largest               and               most               vulnerable               groups.
               A               bill               in               Congress               proposes               making               the               Silver               Alert               Program               available               nationwide.
