The               program               Amber               Alert               was               started               in               Dallas-Fort               Worth               after               the               death               of               9-year-old               Amber               Hagerman.

On               January               13,               1996,               Amber               and               her               brother               were               allowed               to               ride               bikes               around               the               block               at               her               grandparents'               home.

The               brother               rode               home               while               Amber               stopped               to               ride               around               in               a               vacant               parking               lot.

A               neighbor               saw               a               man               pull               Amber               off               of               her               bicycle               and               throw               her               into               his               pickup               truck.

He               called               911               because               because               she               screamed.

Her               body               was               found               four               days               later               only               four               miles               away,               her               throat               slit.

Despite               an               intensive               investigation               at               the               time,               her               murder               is               still               unsolved.

While               some               people               ignore               the               Alerts,               others               are               too               quick               to               post               either               inaccurate               or               cancelled               alerts               on               social               sites.

Either               response               can               contribute               to               the               the               public               becoming               insensitive               and               not               giving               the               Alert               the               attention               it               deserves.

Before               reposting,               please               check               "Active               AMBER               Alerts".

The               child's               information               is               kept               on               the               site               for               a               period               of               ten               days               after               the               initial               report.

Then,               if               the               child               is               still               missing,               the               information               is               relocated               to               the               National               Center               for               Missing               and               Exploited               Children               (NCMEC).

Highlighted               in               green               on               NCMEC's               website               is               "Quck               Search".

You               can               search               for               a               missing               child               by               name               or               simply               put               in               your               state               to               find               all               missing               children               in               your               area.

The               Amber               Alert               was               only               being               used               in               four               states               until               2003,               when               President               George               W.

Bush               signed               the               Protect               Act               into               law.

Issuing               an               Amber               Alert               is               not               taken               lightly               or               used               indiscriminately.

Before               a               state               issues               an               alert,               the               Department               of               Justice's               recommendations               are               usually               closely               followed:
...1)               "Law               enforcement               must               confirm               that               an               abduction               has               taken               place.
...2)               The               child               is               at               risk               of               serious               injury               or               death.
...3)               There               is               sufficient               descriptive               information               of               the               child,               captor,               or               captor's               vehicle               to               issue               an               Alert.
...4)               The               child               must               be               17               years               old               or               younger.
...5)               It               is               recommended               that               the               child's               name               and               other               critical               data               be               entered               immediately               into               the               FBI's               National               Crime               Information               Center.

Information               describing               the               circumstances               of               the               abduction               should               be               entered               and               the               case               flagged               as               a               Child               Abduction."

Keep               alert               and               keep               our               children               safe.

Do               not               become               indifferent               when               you               see               an               Alert;               it               could               be               your               child.

Do               take               the               time               to               be               responsible               when               sharing               Amber               Alerts               and               take               it               off               after               the               child               has               been               found.
