The               mystery               surrounding               missing               12-year-old               Brittany               Smith               deepens               as               the               days               accumulate               in               a               search               that               has               now               spanned               five               days               and               parts               of               the               southeastern               United               States.

Although               the               search               has               been               ongoing               for               five               days,               authorities               believe               the               missing               girl               has               been               in               the               company               of               a               32-year-old               man,               Jeffrey               Scott               Easley,               for               eight               days.

According               to               Lynchburg's               The               News               &               Advance,               Easley               had               been               living               with               Brittany               and               her               mother,               41-year-old               Tina               Smith,               up               until               the               woman's               death.

At               present,               investigators               aren't               certain               as               to               the               relationship               between               Brittany               and               Jeffrey               Easley,               or               whether               she               is               with               the               man               willingly               or               not,               but               Tina               Smith's               murder               complicates               matters,               and               police               now               want               him               for               questioning               regarding               her               homicide.
               Roanoke               County               Police,               who               believe               the               girl               might               be               in               danger,               issued               an               Amber               Alert               for               Brittany               Mae               Smith               Monday               after               finding               her               mother               dead               in               their               Salem,               Virginia,               home.

Police               had               made               a               welfare               check               of               the               home               when               Tina's               co-workers               became               worried               after               she               didn't               report               for               work               for               two               consecutive               days.

Police               have               not               released               any               details               regarding               the               death               other               than               to               report               that               it               was               a               homicide.

They               also               have               not               issued               any               warrants               or               announced               a               suspect               in               the               case.
               Since               Brittany               hadn't               been               seen               for               a               few               days               prior               to               the               discovery               of               her               mother's               body,               nor               had               she               been               to               school,               authorities,               uncertain               of               her               circumstances,               issued               the               Amber               Alert,               noting               that               she               might               be               accompanied               by               Easley,               a               man               authorities               were               told               had               been               living               with               the               Smiths               since               October               after               meeting               Tina               Smith               on               the               Internet.
               A               surveillance               video               later               revealed               that               Jeffrey               Easley               and               Brittany               Smith               had               been               at               a               Salem               Wal-Mart               on               Friday,               Dec.

It               was               determined               that               they               purchased               camping               supplies,               including               a               tent               and               bottled               water.

It               was               unclear               whether               the               young               girl               was               with               Easley               willingly               but               investigators               could               not               say               for               certain               whether               or               not               she               was               under               duress,               but,               operating               on               the               legal               premise               that               Brittany               is               not               of               a               legal               age               to               make               decisions               for               herself,               a               felony               warrant               for               Easley's               arrest               for               kidnapping               was               issued.

Authorities               also               were               uncertain               of               the               timing               of               the               Wal-Mart               visit,               whether               or               not               it               occurred               before               or               after               the               death               of               Tina,               which               indicates               that               Brittany               Smith               may               not               know               that               her               mother               is               deceased.
               But               authorities               maintain               they               are               keeping               an               open               mind               to               all               possibilities               with               regard               to               the               both               investigations.
               The               search               for               the               missing               12-year-old               has               spread               to               Ohio,               West               Virginia,               Kentucky,               North               Carolina,               and               Alabama.

A               false               alarm               resulted               in               a               Florida               man               being               hauled               out               of               a               gas               station               restroom               Thursday               after               a               Florida               Amber               Alert               prompted               an               attendant,               who               thought               the               man               fit               the               description               of               Easley,               to               call               police.
               The               case               garnered               over               500               tips               by               Thursday               evening,               although               not               one               has               yet               led               to               locating               the               missing               girl.

Roanoke               County               Police               Chief               Ray               Lavinder               said               he               believes               that               someone               is               aiding               Easley               and               the               girl,               keeping               them               hidden.
               "For               someone               to               just               drop               off               the               face               of               the               Earth,"               he               said               at               one               of               Wednesday's               press               conferences,               "I               think               someone               would               have               to               be               providing               them               money               or               some               other               support               for               them               to               remain,               I               guess,               unlocated               in               the               public               sector.

Someone,               if               they               are               still               in               this               region,               is               hiding               them.

I'm               certain               of               that."
               Temperatures               in               the               Roanoke               area               have               been               hovering               at               and               below               freezing               for               the               last               week               as               well,               prompting               authorities               to               believe               that               the               pair               might               have               searched               out               more               substantial               shelter               than               the               recently               acquired               tent.
               Police               located               Easley's               SUV,               but               Tina               Smith's               silver               2005               Dodge               Neon,               license               plate               number               XKF-2365,               was               missing,               and               they               began               operating               under               the               supposition               that               the               pair               may               be               traveling               in               the               vehicle.
               In               addition               to               the               Amber               Alerts,               authorities               are               also               searching               camping               grounds,               parks,               and               roadside               rest               areas               in               their               efforts               to               locate               the               girl.

According               to               WSLS               in               Roanoke,               the               National               Center               for               Missing               and               Exploited               Children               is               planning               on               posting               images               of               Brittany               Smith               and               Jeffrey               Easley               on               billboards               in               Virginia,               North               Carolina,               West               Virginia,               Florida,               and               Ohio.

"America's               Most               Wanted,"               the               Fox               Television               program               dedicated               to               helping               authorities               find               some               of               America's               most               dangerous               fugitives               (and               missing               persons),               is               reportedly               set               to               feature               the               investigation               on               its               Saturday               evening               broadcast.
               Brittany               is               described               as               a               5-foot-tall               caucasian               female.

She               has               brown               hair               and               brown               eyes               and               weighs               100               pounds.
               Easley               is               caucasian               male,               5'               11"               tall,               with               hazel               eyes               and               brown               hair.

He               is               believed               to               weigh               about               215               pounds.
