The mystery surrounding missing 12-year-old Brittany Smith deepens as the days accumulate in a search that has now spanned five days and parts of the southeastern United States. Although the search has been ongoing for five days, authorities believe the missing girl has been in the company of a 32-year-old man, Jeffrey Scott Easley, for eight days. According to Lynchburg's The News & Advance, Easley had been living with Brittany and her mother, 41-year-old Tina Smith, up until the woman's death. At present, investigators aren't certain as to the relationship between Brittany and Jeffrey Easley, or whether she is with the man willingly or not, but Tina Smith's murder complicates matters, and police now want him for questioning regarding her homicide. Roanoke County Police, who believe the girl might be in danger, issued an Amber Alert for Brittany Mae Smith Monday after finding her mother dead in their Salem, Virginia, home. Police had made a welfare check of the home when Tina's co-workers became worried after she didn't report for work for two consecutive days. Police have not released any details regarding the death other than to report that it was a homicide. They also have not issued any warrants or announced a suspect in the case. Since Brittany hadn't been seen for a few days prior to the discovery of her mother's body, nor had she been to school, authorities, uncertain of her circumstances, issued the Amber Alert, noting that she might be accompanied by Easley, a man authorities were told had been living with the Smiths since October after meeting Tina Smith on the Internet. A surveillance video later revealed that Jeffrey Easley and Brittany Smith had been at a Salem Wal-Mart on Friday, Dec. 3. It was determined that they purchased camping supplies, including a tent and bottled water. It was unclear whether the young girl was with Easley willingly but investigators could not say for certain whether or not she was under duress, but, operating on the legal premise that Brittany is not of a legal age to make decisions for herself, a felony warrant for Easley's arrest for kidnapping was issued. Authorities also were uncertain of the timing of the Wal-Mart visit, whether or not it occurred before or after the death of Tina, which indicates that Brittany Smith may not know that her mother is deceased. But authorities maintain they are keeping an open mind to all possibilities with regard to the both investigations. The search for the missing 12-year-old has spread to Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Alabama. A false alarm resulted in a Florida man being hauled out of a gas station restroom Thursday after a Florida Amber Alert prompted an attendant, who thought the man fit the description of Easley, to call police. The case garnered over 500 tips by Thursday evening, although not one has yet led to locating the missing girl. Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said he believes that someone is aiding Easley and the girl, keeping them hidden. "For someone to just drop off the face of the Earth," he said at one of Wednesday's press conferences, "I think someone would have to be providing them money or some other support for them to remain, I guess, unlocated in the public sector. I'm almost positive that someone out there knows where Brittany and Mr. Easley are... Someone, if they are still in this region, is hiding them. I'm certain of that." Temperatures in the Roanoke area have been hovering at and below freezing for the last week as well, prompting authorities to believe that the pair might have searched out more substantial shelter than the recently acquired tent. Police located Easley's SUV, but Tina Smith's silver 2005 Dodge Neon, license plate number XKF-2365, was missing, and they began operating under the supposition that the pair may be traveling in the vehicle. In addition to the Amber Alerts, authorities are also searching camping grounds, parks, and roadside rest areas in their efforts to locate the girl. According to WSLS in Roanoke, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is planning on posting images of Brittany Smith and Jeffrey Easley on billboards in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Florida, and Ohio. "America's Most Wanted," the Fox Television program dedicated to helping authorities find some of America's most dangerous fugitives (and missing persons), is reportedly set to feature the investigation on its Saturday evening broadcast. Brittany is described as a 5-foot-tall caucasian female. She has brown hair and brown eyes and weighs 100 pounds. Easley is caucasian male, 5' 11" tall, with hazel eyes and brown hair. He is believed to weigh about 215 pounds. Anyone with any information regarding Brittany Mae Smith and Jeffrey Scott Easley are asked to call the Roanoke County Police Department at 540-777-8641 or dial 911.
